Implementation of the Plastic Recycling Project in the Municipality of Strumica

On 6 December 2007 , the USAID Plastic Recycling Project will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Municipality of Strumica for the implementation of its plastic waste collection program. The American people, through USAID, have invested $30,000 and the Municipality of Strumica is providing the additional ammount for this municipality to implement the collection system and to conduct a public awareness campaign. USAID is part of the U.S. Mission in Macedonia.

“ Recycling plastic waste is viable ecologic and economic process that is in function of developing the municipality and creating healthy ecologic and economic ambient for the young generations with productive ideas” said the Mayor of Strumica, Zoran Zaev.

The municipality will work with the private sector and NGOs to construct and equip “ecological islands” where residents can safely dispose plastic waste. USAID will also support the implementation of a comprehensive public awareness campaign. In Strumica, the campaign will begin in primary schools where children will be educated on the importance of plastic recycling.
