On August 29, 2008, USAID Plastic Recycling Project held official opening of it’s Municipal PET Collection Program in the Municipality of Prilep in cooperation with it’s partners: Municipality of Prilep, Public utility Company “Komunalec” and Media PR- Agency. The event took place during the International Beer Festival- Pivo Fest, when the city hosted more than 150.000 visitors. The goal was to promote plastic recycling at the event where huge amounts of PET waste are traditionally created.
In order to motivate citizens to begin collecting and selecting PET waste, the Project supported local partners MEDIA PR in organizing competition during the promotion. The citizens who brought 5 PET bottles were awarded with yellow t-shirt, recognized by Project’s mascot PET-MEN. |
At the opening ceremony, Mayor of Prilep, Mr.Marijan Risteski and Mrs. Marcia K. Wong delivered their speacehs.
“Preserving clean environment is imperative for all of us. All actors in the society should be clear on their roles and responsibilities in treatment of waste. To day we kick of the Municipal PET Collection Program in Prilep. In order to succeed Municipality, Public Utility Company, NGO’s and YOU citizens will have to cooperate and join our efforts in creating healthy environment for new generation”, said Mr. Marjan Risteski, Mayor of the Municipality of Prilep.

At the end of the ceremony, young star, winner of the Macedonian Kids Eurovision Song Contest, Denis Dimoski, performed for the first time song titled “Collect PET for better world”, especially composed for promoting Projects values.
More than 20,000 visitors visited Projects’ booth.
On July 3rd, 2008 USAID Plastci Recycling Project and the Municipality of Prilep signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for implementation of the Municipal PET Collection Program.
