| Established Association of informal collectors of secondary raw materials |
With the aim to overcome the lack of adequate social and legal protection of the informal waste collectors, strengthen their role in the sector and improve their business performance, the USAID Plastic Recycling Project supported the initiative of the informal waste collectors to establish an association that will target these issues and will try to resolve them on higher -institutional level. >>> |
| First informal waste collectors receive legal recognition in Macedonia |
On 9th of June 2011, 19 informal waste collectors signed a contract with PUC “Komunalna Higiena” and received ID cards and legal acknowledgment for their activities. USAID plastic recycling project along with PUC and PAKOMAK (first authorized company for management of packaging waste) held contract signing ceremony in order to point out the beginning of Macedonian recycling industry development. >>> |
| Start of formal operation for the informal collectors of recyclable waste |
1 June 2011 – 19 informal waste collectors started their process of entering into the formal waste collection system. The USAID Plastic Recycling Project and the Public Utility Company Komunalna Higiena greeted the first group of collectors that chose to formalize their operations. Protective clothes as well as containers’ keys were delivered, and operational regions were distributed to them within 3 municipalities (Centar, Karposh and Gjorche Petrov). >>> |
| USAID PRP supports experience exchange for strengthening municipal capacities for implementing Municipal PET Collection Program |
| On 8 April 2011, USAID PRP organized first of three workshops focused on experience exchange between municipalities in implementing municipal PET collection program and introduction of the Law on Packaging and Packaging waste. Participants represented municipalities, public utility companies, companies that generate packaging waste and civil society representatives from Polog region- Gostivar, Tetovo, Zelino, Bogovinje, Brvenica, Vrapcishte and Jegunovce Students from SEEU participated actively in the discussions at the workshop. The workshop was organized at the South East European University in Tetovo, in cooperation with USAID PRP partner NGO "Sonce". >>> |
| USAID PRP organized training for the informal collectors of plastic waste |
On 01 April2011, USAID PRP organized training for the informal collectors of plastic waste. The training was organized in Kumanovo at the premises of the project NGO partner “Vramasi”.
Business Knowledge training session was about transferring important information to informal collectors of the future changes of the packaging waste management system, and their crucial role and involvement within it.
The training attended first group of 21 informal waste collectors from Kumanovo (from which 3 were female). >>> |
| Huge interest of the informal collectors for trainings organized by USAID Plastic Recycling Project |
On 23 February 2011, USAID PRP organized its first training for the informal collectors of plastic waste. The training was organized in Shuto Orizari at the premises of the project NGO partner “Dendo Vas”.
Representatives from various institutions that are crucial for the process of integration of the informal waste collectors presented their modes of operation, future investments, and possibilities for cooperation with the informal sector. >>> |

| On 23 February, 2011, USAID Plastic Recycling Project will organize first from serial of workshops targeting informal waste collectors. It is expected that this capacity building interventions will result with increase in self employment initiatives, joining different models of cooperation and sign contracts with the utility companies or other entities engaged in the waste management system.>>> |

| USAID PLASTIC RECYCLING PROJECT ENTERRES IT’S THIRD PHASE |
| The Project officially begun on October 2010. This project phase is focused on enabling environment for inclusion of the informal waste collectors into the formal recycling skim. The project should result with increase in employment of representatives of this marginalized group and increased quality of waste management in the targeted municipalities. >>> |
